The above images were taken on an extremely low spring tide at Long Rock, Cornwall. 02.03.14.

Cornwall was unusually subjected to a series or frequent and violent storms during the winter of 2013/14.

The habitat provided by the Eelgrass bed is second to none in the area, indeed large populations of Stalked jellyfish have been found on the Eelgrass there. Four of the ten species of Stalked jellyfish are protected species in the UK and three of these have in the recent past been found on the Eelgrass at Long Rock. The first recent UK record of Haliclystus octoradiatus was from Long Rock in April 2011.

Around 50% of the Eelgrass bed has unfortunately been lost to the storms, causing considerable ecological damage.

More information on Stalked jellyfish can be found at Stauromedusae UK

The main objective of this website is in furthering environmental awareness and education through the medium of photography. To increase awareness and access to the wildlife of the region and help
people find and identify it. Sometimes the difference between species is obvious but many species can only be determined by observing microscopic characteristics that are specific to any one species.
