The specimen, given its shape and colour has the initial appearance of a juvenile sea spider, but on looking closely at the mouthparts it is clear to see it is a mite. The body also lacks the segmentation seen in sea spiders. The specimen was found floating on the surface of a sample container containing algae, which was collected from the extreme lowershore at Wherry Rocks, Penzance, Cornwall. 08.05.16.
The body length of the mite is approx. 500um / 0.5mm
