Mass strandines of this species often occur all around the coast of Cornwall, strandings are rarer the further east you go along the coast. By-the-wind-sailors are pelagic animals and live in open oceans, they arrive here on the Gulf Stream from warmer tropical waters. They are eaten by the beautifully coloured Violet sea snail, Janthina species, which can also be found washed ashore.
