Inodosporus octosporus is commonly known as Cotton or Milk disease of Palaemon serratus, it is very likely the species present here, although there are a number of other fungi that also affect prawns and can turn the muscles white.
This species has sporophorous vacuoles with eight spores and these can be seen using a light microscope on smearing a slide with mashed muscle material then staining with Methyl Blue stain. High magnification over x400 is needed and ideally oil immersion and phase contrast techniques are used to look at the spore containing vacuoles.
The specimen was found on Cellars Beach, Noss Mayo, Devon, 13.07.18 during the Marine Biological Association bioblitz 2018 at Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo.
