The name Furbelow is quite apt for the species as a furbelow is a gathered strip or pleated border of a skirt or petticoat, or a flounce or ruffle. The name best describes the large wavy frills above the holdfast of the species.
This seaweed can be found at many sites all over Devon and Cornwall Peninsula. Images here were taken at Marazion, near Penzance, Cornwall; Porth Nanven, St. Just, Cornwall; and Wembury Point, South Devon.
The small brown algae Chilionema hispanicum can sometimes be found growing as an epiphyte on Saccorhiza polyschides.
